Since 1984 solicitor defending doctors on behalf of the Medical Defence Union at a London firm before moving to Manchester in 1990. From 1995 he headed the MDU’s legal department in Manchester before establishing own firm in 2000 acting in GMC/IOT/MPT hearings.
He has since received instructions for c3000 practitioners in GMC/MPT cases involving criminal convictions, poor clinical practice, performance, dishonesty, misconduct, sexual misconduct and health. Notable cases include:
GMC v JJS
In May 2019 resisted High Court application by GMC to extend by 12 months IOT conditions causing practitioner financial, academic and reputational harm. GMC ordered to pay defence costs c£10,000.
R v Ian Paterson
Original investigation by employing Trust which evolved into GMC investigation. Suspension imposed at 6th IOT hearing. Spiralled into 400+ civil claims for alleged inappropriate and unnecessary surgery with consequent Kennedy Inquiry and Verita report requested by Spire Healthcare Ltd and criminal proceedings resulting in convictions for wounding with intent x17 and unlawful wounding x3 and GMC erasure.

He has represented many doctors at high profile inquiries including Bristol Royal Infirmary 1998-2000 acting for whistleblower, Alder Hey 2001, Toft Inquiry into intrathecal vincristine death QMC 2001, Shipman 2002, Cumbria/BNF 2008, Kennedy into Mr Ian Paterson’s NHS work 2013 and Verita into his private work 2014.
